Partner FRQ Answer: Rachel Ruysch, Fruit and Insects, 1711 C.E., Oil on wood This painting, like most by Ruysch, is a celebration of the scientific discoveries of her age. The artist’s father, Frederik, was an anatomist and botanist at the center of the scientific discoveries of the Enlightenment, fueled in large part by Delft’s Anthonie van Leeuwenhoek’s invention of microbiology, following on the work of Britain’s Robert Hooke. Microscopy enabled scientists to see the previously unseen, and inspired artists to explore and present microcosms.
